NYC Has Raised $175 million in Private Funds. Where, Exactly, is this Money Being Spent?
City's Public Schools Rake In Private Donations
NY1, OCTOBER 10TH, 2004
Private donations are flooding in to help run cash-strapped city schools.
According to the New York Post, in the last two years, the Department of Education has collected private donations totaling $175 million. In past years, giving has been only a fraction of that.
The department has been putting a new emphasis on fundraising, and donors tell the paper that reforms have boosted confidence in the school system.
The high-profile donors include Dave Matthews, whose band played Central Park last year to raise more than $1 million dollars for the Fund for Public Schools. Bill Gates, Rosie O'Donnell and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs have also donated millions.
