City's Public Schools Rake In Private Donations
NY1, OCTOBER 10TH, 2004 Private donations are flooding in to help run cash-strapped city schools. According to the New York Post, in the last two years, the Department of Education has collected private donations totaling $175 million. In past years, giving has been only a fraction of that. The department has been putting a new emphasis on fundraising, and donors tell the paper that reforms have boosted confidence in the school system. The high-profile donors include Dave Matthews, whose band played Central Park last year to raise more than $1 million dollars for the Fund for Public Schools. Bill Gates, Rosie O'Donnell and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs have also donated millions. |
