The E-Accountability Foundation announces the

'A for Accountability' Award

to those who are willing to whistleblow unjust, misleading, or false actions and claims of the politico-educational complex in order to bring about educational reform in favor of children of all races, intellectual ability and economic status. They ask questions that need to be asked, such as "where is the money?" and "Why does it have to be this way?" and they never give up. These people have withstood adversity and have held those who seem not to believe in honesty, integrity and compassion accountable for their actions. The winners of our "A" work to expose wrong-doing not for themselves, but for others - total strangers - for the "Greater Good"of the community and, by their actions, exemplify courage and self-less passion. They are parent advocates. We salute you.

Winners of the "A":

Johnnie Mae Allen
David Possner

Georgia Parents Send Out an Action Alert to Unlock the Waiting Lists For Disabled Kids and Adults With Special Needs
This week [Georgia's] Governor announced in his budget address that he included ONLY 750 disability slots for the 2007 Budget. Dept. of Human Resources requested 1,500...this is half!. There are currently 6,489 people on the waiting lists, with 1,187 people being added to the wait list in 2005 alone. Last year, there were at least 925 slots in the 2006 Budget...a citizen protest is called for.

Action Needed
Updated January 13th 2006

The Governor presented a budget to the General Assembly that will take us backward for Georgians with disabilities. Governor Perdue chose not to fund the 1,500 new slots called for by the multiple year funding plan developed by DHR and DCH. Needlessly to say, we are very disappointed with the Governor's budget.

It is a clear step backward in addressing the waiting lists for disability supports.

Dearest Advocates in Georgia:

This week the Governor announced in his budget address that he included ONLY 750 disability slots for the 2007 Budget (Dept. of Human Resources requested 1,500...this is half!). There are currently 6,489 people on the waiting lists (with 1,187 people being added to the wait list in 2005 alone). Last year, there were at least 925 slots in the 2006 Budget! This is very upsetting and a step in the wrong direction.......since there are thousands of children and adults with disabilities are not receiving services they so desperately need. AADD has done an excellent job of keeping you up to date on this issue (see below). Please take a moment and contact your legislators to let them know this is wrong. (Even if you currently receive the Katie Beckett Waiver.....someday you may need these services too. Everyone needs to get involved with this important disability issue for us now and in the future!)

What are the priorities of this State? We need to help those that can't help themselves. Please just take a few minutes and email your legislators........

Keep you posted. Sincerely, Heidi

The release of the Governor's budget this week came as a real disappointment.
Go to http://www.unlockthewaitinglists.com/actionalert.html to find out how you can help with only two easy steps.
While Governor Perdue included 750 disability slots to unlock the waiting list in his proposed for the 2007 budget, he chose not to fund the recommendation of the multiple year funding plan developed by the Department of Human Resources and Community Health (those state agencies that manage these services) for 1,500 slots.

The fact is that in a year when Georgia's revenues are increasing by over 8%, 750 slots is simply not enough to keep pace with Georgia's growing waiting lists for disability supports. In addition, there was no funding included for the Independent Care Waiver or ICWP slots. Services under these two programs are vital to helping individuals with basic daily living skills, so they can continue to live and work in the community.

Now is the time to ask our state legislators to honor their commitment to Unlock Georgia's waiting lists for home and community based supports for people with disabilities. Currently, over 6,400 people are waiting for services, with this number growing last year by 1,187 people.

Please take five minutes of your time right now to let your voice your frustration and disappointment to your legislators. Please call or email your legislator today.

If you or a family member have been waiting for services, tell them how the lack of services directly affects your life, making sure to include the length of time you have been waiting. If you already have a waiver, please describe how services have helped your family.

In your email or phone call, ask your legislator to support the following changes to the 2007 budget:
· Please fund 1,500 disability slots in the DHR budget as called for by the multiple year plan.
· Please fund 152 Independent Care Waiver (ICWP) slots in the DCH budget.
· Please continue to support additional funding for disability providers that will ensure direct service professionals are paid adequate wages for quality services.

Go to http://www.unlockthewaitinglists.com/actionalert.html to see a sample of what to say in your email.

If you receive a reply from your legislator, please forward it to us and we will post it on the new disability blog at http://aaddpolitical.blogspot.com. You can also find other important information on this blog such as a calendar of important meetings, proposed legislation and actual statements from legislators on our issues.

Thank you for all that you are doing!
