The E-Accountability Foundation announces the

'A for Accountability' Award

to those who are willing to whistleblow unjust, misleading, or false actions and claims of the politico-educational complex in order to bring about educational reform in favor of children of all races, intellectual ability and economic status. They ask questions that need to be asked, such as "where is the money?" and "Why does it have to be this way?" and they never give up. These people have withstood adversity and have held those who seem not to believe in honesty, integrity and compassion accountable for their actions. The winners of our "A" work to expose wrong-doing not for themselves, but for others - total strangers - for the "Greater Good"of the community and, by their actions, exemplify courage and self-less passion. They are parent advocates. We salute you.

Winners of the "A":

Johnnie Mae Allen
David Possner
Dee Alpert
Aaron Carr
Harris Lirtzman
Hipolito Colon
Larry Fisher
The Giraffe Project and Giraffe Heroes' Program
Jimmy Kilpatrick and George Scott

ALERT! From Our Children Left Behind: Conferees Appointed for IDEA Re-authorization; GAO Report Cites Misinformation
Why is IDEA '97 being re-authorized? Much of the data on the implementation of No Child Left Behind is misleading or wrong, says the GAO.

Re-Authorization of IDEA '97:

The E-Accountability Foundation gave the OCLB Principles (below) and a 400-page report on NYC's Special Education to Connie Garner, Senator Ted Kennedy's Special Education Advisor in Washington DC on October 12, 2004.

Our Children Left Behind reports the following about the GAO study and the House conferees:

OCTOBER 15-16, 2004
IDEA WEEKLY UPDATE - READY TO RUMBLE!

LINK

Late Friday night, under cover of darkness, the U.S. House of Representatives finally appointed its conferees, setting the stage for a conference committee to consider the House and Senate bills to reauthorize IDEA. Predictably, this topic dominates our site this week.

We have a Home page article written right after the news broke, IDEA Conference Committee Appointed. This piece includes the news, along with instructions on how to contact the conferees, and some basic talking points to use, gleaned from OCLB's Guiding Principles. We wrote a second article, also posted on our Home page, Last Ditch Efforts to Save The I.D.E.A. For Kids to highlight the importance of contacting our legislators now, while there's still some time left to make a difference. The train may have left the station (as Shari put it), but if we run fast perhaps we can catch up with it before it gathers enough steam to completely outpace us. So let's get moving!!

Finally, in light of the recent release of the embargoed GAO Report on IDEA enforcement (information on this can be found on our Breaking Newspage), we have re-posted a classic OCLB piece, Data Disconnect. This piece will remind you that the data (including the recently released GAO report) does not support the proposed changes to IDEA a powerful point to make in this era of supposedly evidence-based solutions to problems.

We have several pieces of Breaking News this week, stemming from the House appointment of conferees. We have the summary of floor action from the House, an excerpt from the Capitol Insider dealing with this issue, an excerpt from the AUCD Legislative News In Brief discussing this issue, and finally, the NDSC's G.A. Newsline, which, along with discussing the issue, also provides an action alert with helpful tips on how to make our voices heard. This is a very useful piece please read it!

Finally, we have updated our FAQ folder to include information on how to contact ALL of the conferees (both Senate and House members).

Well, it's happened, folks. A conference committee is set to begin considering the proposed changes to IDEA. We need to do our best to influence the final conference report, so please continue to contact your legislators (especially if your legislator is a conferee)! And please remember to check our What YOU Can Do Right NOW link for updated ideas on how you can help!
