BIG BOOST IN SCHOOL AUDITS
By KIERAN CROWLEY, NYPOST, August 4, 2004 LINK August 4, 2004 -- State Comptroller Alan Hevesi yesterday announced he will conduct four more in-depth audits of Long Island school districts - and exploratory audits of at least 15 others - in the wake of the scandals in Roslyn. Hevesi is already auditing the Roslyn district, where two officials have been busted on charges of stealing $1 million each. He said $7 million more is still missing. A separate audit is being conducted at the William Floyd School District in Suffolk, where $750,000 is allegedly missing, said Hevesi. Hevesi said he will initially focus on Long Island but eventually intends to secure funding, hire almost 90 auditors and audit every school district in the state over several years. The first audits will be performed on the books of the Lawrence, Hempstead, Manhasset and Brentwood districts, Hevesi said. The exploratory audits, which will examine administrative expenses, will be conducted in 15 other districts, including East Meadow, Locust Valley, North Shore, Plainedge, Syosset, Westbury, Three Village, Central Islip and Wyandanch. Hevesi said the new districts were chosen because of more than 100 tips his office received about alleged financial improprieties. He added that no wrongdoing has been proved. Home |
