Bas Braams on the "District 2 Miracle":

In the August, 2003, Education Policy Analysis Archives there appeared
an article by Lois Weiner: "Research or 'Cheerleading'? Scholarship on Community School District 2, New York City". In it Weiner takes Lauren Resnick and Richard Elmore to task for their reporting on Manhattan's CSD2. http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v11n27/ Lauren Resnick replied in the next issue. http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v11n28/ Now a reply by Weiner to Resnick is published in the EPAA (Feb 2004): "Reply To Resnick's 'Reforms, Research And Variability'": http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v11n28c/ The principal technical issue is the change in demographics and in the general character of District 2, which is (my words) swept under the rug in the work of Elmore and Resnick. For two earlier contributions by Lois Weiner on District 2 please see: "Construction of District 2's Exemplary Status, When Research and Public Policy Elide", AERA Meeting, New Orleans, April, 2002: http://www.math.nyu.edu/mfdd/braams/nychold/weiner-aera-02.html "Standardization's Stifling Impact", in Education Week, Feb 28, 2001: http://www.edweek.org/ew/ewstory.cfm?slug=24weiner.h20 Bas |
