Reading Specialists Offered To Assist Chancellor Klein, But Were Ignored
![]()
In a February 2003 letter, leading reading specialists offered to help Chancellor Joel Klein choose a literacy program for New York City public schools. We understand that their offer was ignored, and Mr. Klein chose a reading program unsupported by scientific data which he was forced to throw away in January 2004 or the Federal government would not give to NYC $34 million under No Child Left Behind guidelines.
"We offer our help as local experts with extensive knowledge of reading and reading instruction. We have conducted scientifically based studies with children, adolescents, and adults to understand how they learn to read, why some have difficulties, and which types of programs are most effective for teaching reading..." In fact, Joel Klein and Diana Lam spoke about their support for "balanced literacy" and phonics, while this may be just whole language gobbly gook. |
